Abstract
525,382. Variable-speed gearing. NEEDHAM, J. Feb. 20, 1939, No. 5609. [Class 80 (ii)] A unit for use in variable-speed expanding- pulley type of gearing comprises a pulley 21, Fig. 3, of fixed diameter secured to a sleeve 23 rotatably mounted on a shaft 12, and a variable diameter pulley comprising inter-engaging conical discs 25, 26 slidably keyed to the sleeve and subjected the pressure of springs 28, 29. Both the pulleys 21 and 25, 26 are adapted to receive V-driving belts such as 22c, 22d. In Fig. 1, a number of these units, 17, 17a &c. are arranged on parallel shafts 11, 12 in series, the variable diameter pulley of one unit driving the fixed diameter pulley of the next and the drive being taken to and from the unit by driving and driven belts 22, 22e. The shaft 12 is adapted to be displaced relatively to the shaft 11 by means of a screw 13 acting on a frame 15, 16 to increase or decrease the tension on the belts and so move the two halves of the expanding pulleys apart or allow the springs 28, 29 to bring them together to decrease or increase the effective diameters of the pulley and thus adjust the gear ratio. In a modification, the hubs of the two portions of the pulley of variable diameter have a number of opposite circumferentially spaced lugs connected by helical springs. In a further modification, suitable for wider belts, the halves of the variable diameter pulley have plain sloping faces and the loading springs are located in recesses or grooves in the hubs and in a collar secured to the sleeve. Instead of moving one of the shafts, both, 11a, 12a, Fig. 6, may be fixed and the belts adjusted by engaging pulleys at the ends of adjustable levers 58 pivoted at 59 and movable together.
