Abstract

375,610. Variable-speed gearing. WELLTON, O. G., Saltsjobaden, near Stockholm. Sept. 1, 1931, No. 24574. [Class 80 (ii).] A friction disc 12 is driven by a shaft 1 and drives sets of tiltable rollers 13, 14 which are connected through bevel gears with the sun wheels 23, 24 of a differential gear, the planet pinions 25 of which are mounted on arms 27 loose on an intermediate shaft 20, and connected through a plate clutch 29 to the driven shaft. The disc and rollers are of hard material which is elastically deformed under high pressure to give a tooth-like engagement. In a modified construction one of the sun wheels is directly connected to the shaft 1 and only one side of the disc is provided with rollers. In the construction shown the shaft 1 drives the disc 12 through spur-wheels and shafts 8. These rollers contact with each side of the disc those on the left being geared to the shaft 20 and those on the right to a sleeve 22 carrying the wheel 24. The wheel 23 is fast on the shaft 20. The rollers are caused to tilt on their spindles by means of rings 43, 46 and links 41, 44. The rings are connected to a rockable shaft 51 and hand-wheel 52 by links 47, 48, so that the rollers tilt in opposite senses and are carried by their precession in opposite radial directions across the disc 12. The wheels 23, 24 are therefore driven at different speeds and a rotation proportional to this difference is imparted to the planet wheels 25, and thence to a drum 30 and driven shaft 2. The rollers 13 are carried by a piston 31 which is forced to the right by fluid admitted to a chamber 32 by a pipe 33. The fluid is also used to operate an annular piston 36 and thus to engage the clutch 29.
