[Class 6 (i).] A machine for consolidating the foundation soil of roads and the like comprises rollers a and soil vibrating mechanism b adapted to cause forces of variable periodicity and intensity to be applied to the soil, and the rollers a and vibratory mechanism b are arranged to be relatively adjustable in a frame f so that the vibratory mechanism may either rest on the rollers a, as shown in Fig. 1, so that pressure and jigging motion may be simultaneously transmitted to the soil, or on the frame, as shown in Fig. 2, so that the rollers a serve as a counterweight and the machine acts exclusively as a vibrating-machine. The vibratory machine and the rollers may be adjusted relative to one another in the frame f by screws e. The vibrating mechanism consists of oppositelymoving unbalanced flywheels c driven by an electric motor or other means. The rollers a may consist of several removable parts which enable the action of the rollers as counterweights to be varied.
