Abstract

Aromatic hydroxyaldehydes are manufactured by oxidizing phenols containing a propenyl group in the o- or p-position in alkaline solution by means of nitro compounds which owing to their content in sulphonic or carboxylic groups are soluble in alkaline water (except halogen-nitroaryl sulphonic or carboxylic acids containing a halogen atom in the o-position to the nitro group). In examples, iso-eugenol is oxidized to vanillin by means of a caustic soda solution of nitrobenzene-m-sulphonic acid, p-nitrobenzoic acid or 1-chloro-4-nitrobenzene-2-sulphonic acid, and 2-hydroxy-3-propenylbenzoic acid to 2-hydroxy-3-aldehydebenzoic acid by means of the first of these oxidizing agents.
