Abstract

Triarylmethane dyestuffs are prepared (a) by condensing an aromatic alkylsulphonic acid with benzaldehyde or derivative and oxidizing the resulting leuco triarylmethane compound or (b) by condensing a hydrol of the diarylmethane series with an aromatic alkylsulphonic acid and oxidizing the resulting leuco compound. In examples: (1) tetraethyldiaminobenzhydrol is condensed in the presence of sulphuric acid with o-sulphomethylphenyltaurine or 1 : 2-xylyl-o : o - disulphonic acid and the leuco compound oxidized after separation by means of caustic soda: (2) tetramethyldiaminobenzhydrol is similarly condensed with b -sulphoethylbenzene and oxidized to the dyestuff: (3) o-chlorbenzaldehyde is condensed with o-monobenzylaminobenzyl-o -sulphonic acid and the leuco compound oxidized. Dyestuffs containing amine and arylamino groups are mentioned. o-Sulphomethylphenyltaurine may be made from chlorethanesulphonic acid and 1-amino-2-sulphomethylbenzene. 1 : 2 - Xylyl - o : o - disulphonic acid may be made by reacting 1 : 2-dichlormethylbenzene with sodium sulphite. b - Sulphoethylbenzene may be made by reacting b -chlorethylbenzene with sodium sulphite. o - Monobenzylaminobenzyl - o - sulphonic acid may be made by benzylating o-amino-benzyl-o -sulphonic acid.
