Abstract
Aromatic oxyaldehydes are prepared by oxidizing phenols containing a carbinol group in o- or p-position with nitroaryl sulphonic and carboxylic acids in alkaline solution. The use of nitroaryl sulphonic and carboxylic acids containing a halogen atom in o-position to the nitro group is excluded. The starting materials may be obtained by condensing phenols with formaldehyde p in alkaline solution. According to the examples, (1) vanillin is prepared from vanillyl alcohol using m-nitrobenzene-sulphonic acid or p-nitrobenzoic acid, (2) vanillin together with 4-hydroxy-3-methoxybenzoyl-carboxylic acid is obtained from guaiacol-trichloromethylcarbinol using a nitrobenzene sulphonation product, (3) phenol is condensed with formaldehyde in sodium hydroxide solution and oxidized with m-nitrobenzene-sulphonic acid to a mixture of salicylaldehyde and p-hydroxybenzaldehyde, (4) 4-hydroxyuvitine-aldehyde is prepared from dimethylol-p-cresol with the aid of m-nitrobenzene-sulphonic acid.
