[Class 39 (i).] An illuminating device for a microscope comprises a luminous electric discharge tube arranged to surround the optical axis of the microscope partially or entirely, and placed substantially at the level of the objective. In the form shown the lamp 11 is carried by supports 8 on the base of the microscope so as partially to surround the stage 7 and is provided with a covering plate 12, silvered on the inner surface. Alternatively, the tube may be carried by the movable part 4 of the support of the microscope. For use in photomicrography a tube having a filling of mercury giving an emission rich in blue and ultra-violet rays may. be used.
