Abstract

391,280. Gates. SNARE, E., 174, Streatham Road, Mitcham, Surrey. Feb. 18, 1932, No. 4831. [Class 45.] In a collapsable gate of the type having vertical pickets interconnected by lazy-tongs, metal plates extending substantially the full height of the gate are secured along one vertical edge to certain of the pickets so as to slide one over the other as the gate opens and closes, and guide means are provided to ensure that the free edges of the plates move parallel with the plane of the gate. Each plate may be connected near its free edge and at a point intermediate of its length to an adjacent plate by a pin and slot connection, or, as shown in Fig. 2, the free edges of the plates may be stiffened by bars 15 which engage top and bottom in guide channels 17 parallel to the usual picket guides or tracks 13. The bars may be offset as at 16 top and bottom to successively decreasing extents so that the ends of the bars slide in a common track as shown, or such offsets may be omitted and a number of separate tracks used. Alternatively an offset extension 19, Fig. 4, may be provided on the free edges of the plates to carry a pulley 21 which runs on a guide 22 parallel with the picket roller guide 12. In the form shown in Fig. 6, each plate 24, is hinged to its picket so that when the gate is open the plates may be swung to the position shown and the gate as a whole moved nearer to the left side 26 of the opening, thereby providing an enlarged opening, the guides being slotted or being provided with displaceable flanges to permit the outward swinging of the plates, or the stiffening bars 28 may for this purpose be provided with retractable bolts engaging the guide tracks.
