Abstract

497,374. Gates; sliding doors. PRESTON, P. June 19, 1937, No. 17131. [Class 45] [Also in Group X] A collapsable gate comprises panels interconnected by hinges on a series of verticals arranged alternately at different sides of the gate and co-operating with guideways controlling the collapse and extension of the gate, the majority of the panels being coplanar when the gate is extended. As shown the panels 10 are hinged to vertical channel bars 11, 12 and the main verticals 11 are suspended on rollers 21 running on a rail 18, the left-hand vertical 11<1> being fixed at the side of the opening. Hinge-joints 14a secure the panels to hinge-pins 15, the transversals 14 passing completely across the panel, which, as shown in Fig. 3, lies between two transversals 14 riveted together. The rail 18 is spaced from a dependent web 17 by a channel bar 20 and top pieces 22 on the main verticals are in sliding engagement with the rail. The tops 23 of the intermediate verticals slide in a groove formed by the rail and the bottom of the web 17. Members 24, 25, 25<1> extending along the gateway at floor level form a slideway which is entered to half depth by the feet 26 of the intermediate verticals and to full depth by the feet of the main verticals. The arrangement is such that, when the gate is fully extended, all the panels except the first two are coplanar and the gate is substantially closed against draught. To guide the parts during collapse and extension a cam 28 is mounted in a recess in the web 17. The cam is pivoted at 30 and is normally urged by a spring 32 into a position at which it allows the tops 22 of the main verticals to pass along the guideway. The top engages the rear end 31 of the cam and displaces it into the position shown, in which the next oncoming intermediate vertical is deflected outwards, and the collapsing of that section of the gate is initiated. When each top 22 has passed, the cam is again rotated to leave the guideway unobstructed. A corresponding guide 2511 with or without a cam, may be provided at the bottom. In a modification, the transversals 14 of the hinges are omitted, and "piano " hinges extend continuously throughout the height of the gate.
