[Class 100 (i).] In laying-off apparatus for sheet-cutting machines, the mechanism for keeping the apparatus level with the top of the pile is driven directly from an electric motor mounted on the carriage carrying the apparatus. Slides s, s<1> mounted on vertical rods z, z<1> carrying the laying-off apparatus are connected by ropes h passing over pulleys f, g to balance weights d. The electric motor m is mounted on the slide s and drives a shaft a through bevel-gearing k, l. A drum b on the shaft a carries the ends of the delivery belts p<1> and is coupled to the deliveryroller c. Belts p<2>, p<3> situated above the belts p<1> are also driven from the shaft a. A relatively stationary surface u supports the sheets between the rollers b, c. The other end of the shaft a drives mechanism r<1> .. r<6> on the slide s<1> engaging racks on the guide rods z<1>. A variable-stroke ratchet mechanism v can be adjusted so as to vary the speed according to the thickness of.the sheets, and the motor is provided with a speed regulator.
