Vertical-cutter type for cutting sheet material in direction of feed.-Relates to band-knife machines for splitting or skiving leather &c. and consists in the combination of an endless-band knife with a feeding-device comprising a revolving roller co-operating with a fixed ledge. The knife 10, Fig. 1. passes around pulleys 9, 9<1> mounted on shafts 6, 7 of which one shaft 6 is driven through bevel-gear 16, 17 from a shaft 2 driven by belt pulleys 3. A bracket having a base 18, Figs. 3 and 4, and outstanding cheeks 19 is secured to a longitudinal frame member 4 and has fixed to it one of a pair of guide cheeks 21, 22, Fig. 7, for the knife, the other cheek being adjustable by means of a lever 64 and setscrews. The knife rests on rollers 23, which may t e adjusted vertically by screws 59. The feed-roller 29 is carried in a frame 26 pivoted at 25, and is pressed outward by springs 40 towards a ledge 42 fixed to a frame 46 pivoted at 45 and adjustable by a screw 50. The ledge is adjustable vertically by a screw 49. The roller 29 is driven at each end by worm-and-bevel gears 39, 37 from a shaft 27 driven by a chain gear 30 from the shaft 2. A clutch 35 operated by a lever 33 renders the drive for the feed-roller inoperative when desired. The shaft 7 is movable to tension the knife band, and may also be slightly inclined by manipulating the screws 14 and knife edges 13 to compensate if necessary for one edge of the band being longer than the other. The knife is sharpened continuously by two grinding wheels driven through cords from the shaft 2, and to raise the knife when worn the pulleys 9, 9<1> may be adjusted on their shafts by the screws 60, Fig. 6, between washers 61, 62 on which the boss 63 of the pulley is gripped.
