Abstract

188,622. Marks, E. C. R., (Benjamin Co. Inc., E. V.). May 10, 1921. Feeding webs.-In apparatus for feeding a web of cloth or other material to a machine, particularly the cutting-machine described in Specification 185,794, the web is fed from a roll into one limb of a V-shaped trough from the other limb of which it is withdrawn at a slightly lower speed, means being provided to stop the feed into the trough when the accumulation of web therein becomes excessive. As shown, the trough comprises two U-shaped walls 40, 41 secured to a framework consisting of cross bars 23, 24, 25. and columns 20, 21. Guide rollers 32, 35. 38 are mounted on the cross bars and a pair of feed rollers 50, 66 are mounted in the columns 20. The feed-rollers are adjustably pressed together by screws 47 and the lower roller 66 is driven by a chain 77 passing round a sprocket wheel 67 and round a slightly larger sprocket wheel 61 loose upon but adapted to be clutched to a shaft 59 driven by a chain 64 from the cutting machine. The speed of the shaft 59 is such that the web gradually accumulates in the trough, but when this accumulation becomes excessive, the operator opens the clutch on the shaft 59 to stop the drive of the feed rolls 50, 66.
