Abstract

Materials made of or containing cellulose carboxylates are saponified by subjecting them to the action of a gaseous or vaporous saponifying agent at substantially above atmospheric temperature, preferably in the absence or substantial absence of water, or in the presence of water in restricted quantity. For example, yarns of cellulose carboxylates may be subjected to the action of a current of ammonia at 80-150 DEG C. The saponifying agent may be admixed with an inert gas, preferably nitrogen or other non-oxidizing gas. Organic substances having a softening or swelling action on the cellulose ester, e.g. benzene, halogenated hydrocarbons, alcohols, ketones, glycerine, and glycol, may be present either in the saponifying agent, or in the cellulose ester as the result of a prior treatment. Other saponifying agents mentioned are alcohol, and aliphatic amines, e.g. mono-, di-, and tri-methylamine or -ethylamine, together, if desired, with a saponification catalyst such as a tertiary base. In examples, (1) acetate silk is treated at 100 DEG C. with a current of nitrogen which has been passed through concentrated aqueous ammonia, (2) acetate silk is moistened with triethanolamine and treated at 100 DEG C. with a current of nitrogen containing ethyl alcohol vapour. Specification 313,971, [Class 2 (ii), Cellulose &c.], is referred to.
