Abstract

388,961. Lubricating universal joints. SHEPHERD, G. R., 2, Norfolk Street, Strand, London.-(Westinghouse Electric & Manufacturing Co. ; East Pittsburg, U.S.A.) May 10, 1932, No. 13437. [Class 12 (ii).] A torque-transmitting coupling for a locomotive centre-axle drive comprises a motor-driven gear wheel 10 mounted in the superstructure, a wheel axle 17 extending through the gear wheel, a universal joint connecting these members, and means carried by the wheel 10 which encloses the coupling and contains lubricant therefor. As shown, a driving pinion 11 and the wheel 10 are mounted within a casing 38 carried by the locomotive superstructure 14, the wheel 10 being carried by two side plates 12 integral with hollow hubs 16 working within bearings 15. Sufficient clearance is allowed within the hubs 16 and the universal coupling itself to allow relative movement between the axle 17 and the superstructure owing to the springing of the latter. The casing 38, wheel 10 and plates 12 constitute oil reservoirs 42, 41 for lubricating the gear and coupling respectively ; if the same oil is to be employed for these purposes, the two reservoirs may be joined by suitable vents. Boots 35 connecting the axle 17 and the casing prevent leakage from the inner reservoir.
