Abstract

388,507. Drying systems. DAVIES, R. O., 231, Strand, London. Nov. 26, 1931, No. 32763. [Class 34 (ii).] In a multistage drying - chamber traversed by two or more conveyer bands arranged one above the other and separately fed with the material, e.g. root crops, hay, or grain, to be dried, the preheated drying agent, which is first supplied to the driest material and finally discharged through the wettest material, being blown or drawn at each stage by means of an independent fan, and being reheated between the stages by admixture with hot combustion gases or steamheated air, passes through both layers at each stage, and is also supplied with additional heat between each pair of belts in the wettest stage, and preferably in the adjacent stage also. As shown, the drying-chamber is divided into three stages, the two stages containing the wetter material being each subdivided into two separate compartments a<1>, a<2> and a<3>, a4, while the two halves a<5>, a<6> of the driest stage are in communication. The compartments a<1>, a<2> are divided by partition plates v into cells v<1>. The material is fed in at c<1>, c<2>, and out at r<1>, r. One fan is provided for compartments a<5>, a<6>, and one each for compartments a<4>, a<3>, a2, a<1>, the fans for compartments a<1> .. a<4> being in independent communication with a source of reheating gases, e.g. furnace gases, which gases are mixed with the heated air from the preceding stage or compartment. Part of the air from compartments a<1>, a2 is discharged to the atmosphere, the remainder being retained in circulation.
