Abstract

386,315. Microphones. LANGTON, C. C., 7, Richmond Gardens, Hendon, London. June 12, 1931, No. 17083. [Class 40 (iv).] Light from a source 1 is passed through a collimating lens 2 to a glass block 3 which divides the incident beam 4 into two beams 5, 6 which pass through apertures in a diaphragm 7 and through glass plates 8, 9. The beams after passing through apertures in a second diaphragm 10 fall on a glass block 11 and are recombined to form a single beam 12 which after passing through diaphragm 13, prism 14, and a lens system 15 is focussed on to a slit in a screen 16 behind which is a photo-electric cell 17 connected to an amplifier. In the path of the beam 5 is a stiff-walled tube 18 which protects the air inside from outside disturbances. Changes in pressure due to sound impulses in the air within the tube 18 relatively to the surrounding air, or in the latter when the pressure of air in the tube is kept constant, will cause variations in the order of interference in the recombined beam: The division of the original beam may be produced by a lens close to a diaphragm with two apertures, also a prism may be placed between the lens 2 and the block 3. The amplifier may be connected to.a loud-speaker or the cell may be connected to an amplifier which controls an optical: recording device such as is commonly used in the production of talking films.
