Optical apparatus.-In recording sound photographically by converting it into current fluctuations which are converted into sound fluctuations acting on a sensitive film &c. the light fluctuations, either before or after acting on the film, are caused to influence a circuit containing a monitoring telephone or speaker so as to indicate the characteristics of the recorded sound and thus disclose, whilst recording, any distortion which may be introduced by the amplifying means for the sound-influenced current. In one arrangement, Fig. 1, the beam from the fluctuating light source 3 makes a record on the film 5 and passes therethrough to fall on to one or more light-sensitive cells 8 in circuit with amplifying devices and one or more telephones or speakers. In another arrangement, Fig. 2 a part of the fluctuating light directed on to the film is deflected or reflected by a prism, mirrors, &c. 12 to influence the cell or cells 8. The record is preferably made on a part of the film between the feeding and guiding sprockets where it is traversed uniformly against a film gate. The cell is suitably mounted on the back of the film gate.
