[Class 40 (ii).] A combined sound and picture film record has the pictures compressed in one direction on a fi 1 m of standard width so that the area of film available for sound records is increased in order that two separate sound records can be accommodated. As shown in Fig. 1, a film 10 on which a compressed picture record has already been recorded is moved past two similar sets of optical soundrecording apparatus each comprising a light source 17, light from which is modulated by a sound-influenced light-valve such as 15 and projected by lenses 11, 13 on to one margin of the film 10. The light valve 15 may be fed with signals from a microphone which picks up the voices of the actors while the light-valve 16 of the other recording system is influenced from a microphone which receives other sounds such as music. The two sound records may be registered one on each side of the pictures or they may be adjacent to each other on the same side of the pictures. These sound records are reproduced by apparatus as shown in Fig. 2, comprising light sources 23, 24 which project light through suitable optical systems and the respective records to photo-electric cells 21, 22, respectively. The signals from each sound record can be supplied to a separate loud-speaker. As illustrated by Fig. 3, the records of speech are reproduced by a loudspeaker 35 disposed behind the screen 36 while the music is reproduced by a loudspeaker 37 situated in the orchestra well.
