Abstract
503,853. Optical microphones. MARCONI'S WIRELESS TELEGRAPH CO., Ltd., and BANKS, G. B. Oct. 14, 1937, No. 27996. [Class 40 (iii)] A microphone, i.e. a device for translating sound into electrical variations, comprises an electron discharge device 8, a source of light 5, a reflecting surface 3, means responsive to incident sound for moving said reflecting surface, a second reflecting surface 4, and means for projecting light from said source to said electron discharge device after a plurality of reflections between said reflecting surfaces 3, 4, a plurality of times from the acoustically moved surface 3 before reaching the cathode 7, so that an inertia-free "optical-lever" effect is obtained, a small movement of the said surface 3 producing a large change in the light incident upon the cathode. In the form shown in Fig. 1, the reflecting surface 3 is a sound vibrated diaphragm opposite an opening 2 in a box 1, the light source 5 is slit-like and associated with a lens system 6, and the reflected light is focused on the edge of a slit-like outlet 4b on its way to the cathode 7. In a modification, there is a grating in the path of the light from the source to the reflecting surface 3 and a second grating between this surface and the cathode.
