[Class 60.] Wheels and other tools.-A Naumkeag or like tool for scouring shoe parts comprises an abrasive cover of lenticular or pencil shape, the cover being air backed so as to provide a yielding abrasive surface when the tool is rapidly rotated and to avoid charring of the work. A column 1 carries a bracket 3 fitted with a head having a stem 5 and provided with a member 9 having bearings for a vertical shaft 11 carrying a Naumkeag scouring tool. This comprises a stem 15 terminating in a plate 17 and fitted with a clamping member 19 moved down. wardly by a screwed ring 21. A moulded abrasive cover having a number of slits in the inturned portion is held against a rubber ring 25 by the member 19 and may be centred by a pin passing through a hole 26 into a bore 28. In use, when the cover is rotated at high speed the centrifugal force serves to keep the cover in shape and to give a yielding action without the provision of solid backing to the abrasive cover. The machine is also provided with a frusto-conical tool mounted on a horizontal shaft 41, both tools being driven by belt gearing from a countershaft 37. The frusto-conical tool comprises a hub 45 carrying rubber collars 53 separated by a spacer 49. The rubber collars are expanded to grip the abrasive cover 63 by a screw 55 and the cover is further secured by a screw ring 65 which draws a split sleeve member 67 over the large end of the cover. The spacer 49 is arranged so that the yieldable working portion of the tool is air-backed. Specifications 23394/04 and 249,656, [both in Class 60, Grinding or abrading &c.], are referred to.
