Abstract

A cellulose ether is dissolved in a solvent mixture which remains liquid at about 25 DEG C. and comprises at least two volatile aromatic hydrocarbons which evaporate at different rates, and at least two volatile aliphatic or hydroaromatic alcohols. The ether may be an alkyl, aralkyl, or alkyl-aralkyl cellulose insoluble in water, e.g. an ethyl cellulose containing at least 40 per cent ethoxyl. Ethers specified are ethyl celluloses (42,5-48 per cent ethoxyl), ethyl-butyl cellulose (27 per cent ethoxyl, 22 per cent butoxyl), benzyl cellulose (54 per cent benzyl), and ethyl-benzyl cellulose. Suitable aromatic hydrocarbons include benzene, toluene, xylene, solvent naphtha, mesitylene, cumene, cymene; suitable alcohols include methanol, ethanol, n-propanolisopropanol, n-butanol, iso-butanol, amyl alcohol, glycol monomethyl, mono-ethyl, monopropyl and monobutyl ethers, cyclohexanol, methylcyclohexanol. A number of solvent mixtures are specified as well as the compositions zinc lacquers. Optional additions include volatile esters, e.g. ethyl, butyl, amyl, ethyl-glycol, and cyclohexyl acetates; ketones, e.g. acetone, methyl-ethyl-ketone, cyclohexanone; ketonealcohols, e.g. diacetone-alcohol; and various lacquer ingredients. The solutions may be mixed with nitrocellulose and other lacquers.ALSO:A cellulose ether is dissolved in a solvent mixture which remains liquid at about 25 DEG C and comprises at least two volatile aromatic hydrocarbons which evaporate at different rates and at least two volatile aliphatic or hydroaromatic alcohols. The ether may be an alkyl, aralkyl, or alkyl-aralkyl cellulose insoluble in water, e.g. and ethyl cellulose containing at least 40 per cent ethoxyl. Ethers specified are ethyl celluloses (42,5 per cent--48 per cent ethoxyl), ethyl-butyl cellulose (27 per cent ethoxyl, 22 per cent butoxyl), benzyl cellulose containing 54 per cent benzyl, and ethylbenzyl cellulose. Suitable aromatic hydrocarbons include benzene, toluene, xylene, solvent naphtha, mesitylene, cumene, cymene; suitable alcohols include methanol, ethanol, n-propanol, iso-propanol, n-butanol, iso-butanol, amyl alcohol, glycol-monomethyl, monoethyl, monopropyl, and monobutyl ethers, cyclohexanol, methyl-cyclohexanol. A number of solvent mixtures are specified, as well as the compositions of nine lacquers. Optional additions are volatile esters, e.g. ethyl, butyl, amyl, ethyl-glycol, and cyclohexyl acetates; ketones, e.g. acetone, methyl-ethyl ketone, cyclohexanone; ketone-alcohols, e.g. diacetonealcohol; softening agents, e.g. alkyl or aralkyl phosphates, tri-cresyl phosphate, triphenyl phosphate, phthalic acid esters, dibutylphthalic ester, derivatives of benzene or toluene sulphonic acids such as p-toluenesulphonic-diethylamide; resins, e.g. resin, glycerine-rosinate, cumarone resin, dammar, copal; artificial resins; drying oils, e.g. linseed oil; nitrocellulose or other lacquers; waxes; and soluble dyestuffs.
