382,174. Internal-combustion tamping or ramming devices. JOHNSON, J. N., Wharfedene, Skipton Road, Ilkley, Yorkshire. Feb. 20, 1932, No. 5096. [Class 124.] The piston-rod carries a ramming foot 5 and operates between opposed springs 6, 7, one between the piston 2 and the cylinder end 4, and the other between the cylinder end 4 and the foot 5, the whole apparatus being thrown up off the ground at each explosion. As the cylinder continues to descend after the foot 5 strikes the ground, and the open exhausts 23 are closed, the fired charge is expelled past a valve 21, which closes on explosion, and a new charge is drawn in as the cylinder rises again under the action of the spring 7, the charge entering the cylinder through a port 19 past a valve 18 in a passage 17 leading from an annular mixing chamber 13. Fuel vapour passes to this chamber from a tank 8 through a filtering chamber 10 and pipes 12, and air enters it through openings 15 with adjustable screw caps 16. For charging the cylinder initially it is depressed against the spring 7 and released.
