Abstract

381,919. Variable-pitch propellers. FAIREY AVIATION CO., Ltd., Cranford Lane, Hayes, and WILLIAMS, D. L. H., Hill Side, Swakeley's Road, Ickenham, both in Middlesex. July 3, 1931, No. 19261. [Class 114.] Variable-pitch propellers wherein the blades are mounted in sockets on the boss are provided with pitch changing mechanism comprising a number of projections on the blade roots engaging helical slots in the sockets, such projections having screw threads on their peripheries engaging a nut rotatable on the socket. The blade root a has secured to it a flange member c with projections thereon the outer edge of which is threaded. The socket e is provided with inclined slots d through which the projections c pass. The screw member c engages an internal screw ring f detachably and rotatably mounted upon the outside of the socket and carries a bevel segment r meshing with the common bevel t in order to provide equal pitch changes for each blade. The screw ring f has a projection k carrying a key member j, which can be operated by the pilot, of which the key n engages the corresponding lock h on the end of the blade. The pitch of the blade can only alter when this lock is released and only vary in one direction the blade having to be reset by hand when the propeller is stationary. In order to control the rate of pitch change, the bevel members t are provided with a cam surface v against which abuts the ram of an hydraulic buffer u.
