Abstract

Female sexual hormone of the formula C18H24O3 obtained from urine or other body fluids, or oils or preparations containing this hormone, are treated with an agent capable of removing water from the molecule so as to yield a hormone of the formula C18H22O2. The reaction may be brought about by heating with potassium bisulphate, phosphorous pentoxide or the like, or catalytically by passing the vapours over alumina, bleaching earths, or other highly porous substances. According to examples the starting material is heated with potassium bisulphate or porous bleaching earth in a retort and is distilled off under high vacuum at temperatures between 120 and 200 DEG C. The distillate may be dissolved in alcohol and precipitated therefrom by addition of water.
