380,838. Straight bar knitting- machines. SCHUBERT & SALZER MASCHINENFABRIK AKT.-GES., 11, Lothringerstrasse, Chemnitz, Germany. June 24, 1931, No. 18267. Convention date, Aug. 1, 1930. [Class 74 (ii).] A method of widening applicable to stocking frames &c. consists in casting-on in a separate operation the yarn being presented without sinking to the penultimate needle of the series and laid round the selvage loop. This is done by deflecting the penultimate needle out of the line as the needles ascend. This needle by thus forming an unsunk loop requires less yarn than usual, so contributing to the formation of a form selvage. The needles are pressed individually by spring fingers 2 and a certain number of the end needles can be deflected by the action of sliding instruments 7 on the fingers. The instruments are operated by arms 9 mounted on a shaft 6 operated by a cam. The device is brought into or out of action by shogging a cam roller into or out of reach of the cam.
