Abstract
Heavy oils, such as are obtained from asphalt, shale, lignite, peat or petroleum, are rendered suitable for use as motor fuels by admixture with an activator prepared by treating with a nitrating agent the residues obtained in the refining of such oils, for example with sulphuric acid, and then partially reducing the resulting nitro-compounds to yield a mixture of nitro-, azo-, diazo-, and hydrazo-compounds. The activator is preferably added as a 10 per cent solution in alcohol-benzol mixture containing 3 parts of nitroto 1 part of diazo- or hydrazo-compound. In the case of Russian oils containing olefines, purification and nitration may be effected in one operation by using a mixture of nitric and sulphuric acids. Sulphur compounds may be removed from the acid-treated oil by treatment with metallic lead shavings.
