Abstract
Fuel for internal-combustion engines consists of narrow fractions separated during the distillation of hydrocarbons such as kerosine or oils obtained by the destructive hydrogenation of kerosine, gas oil, or other heavy oil. The fractions have a flash point above 100 DEG F. and are free from heavy ends boiling above about 550 DEG F. and have a boiling range of not more than 150 DEG F. Antidetonating agents such as lead tetraethyl or iron carbonyl may be added. The destructive hydrogenation is carried out under a pressure of 50-200 atmospheres at temperatures of 900-1000 DEG F. in presence of catalysts such as oxides or sulphides of metals of the sixth group of the periodic table, which may be mixed with magnesia, lime, rare earths, alumina, thoria, &c.
