Abstract

377,928. Road vehicle semi-elliptic springs. THORNYCROFT & CO., Ltd., J. I., Thornycroft House, Smith Square, Westminster, and BARFORD, V. G., Motor Vehicle and Engine Works, Basingstoke, Hampshire.. Oct. 7, 1931, No. 10703/32. Divided application. [Classes 108 (ii) and 108 (iii).] An underslung semielliptical spring is connected to the axle by a box frame which encircles the centre of the spring and is without' external projections on either side, that is, transversely of the vehicle. The spring 1 is secured in a box 2, 3 made in two parts clamped together by set bolts 4, the heads of which enter recesses in the box. Some of the leaves are formed with lateral projections 1a which engage openings in the side of the box so as to retain the spring in position. The box is bolted up to the axle casing 5 by set bolts 7 and it may be formed with a registering projection which engages a recess 5a in the axle casing. The narrow construction of spring mounting thus obtained enables wide spring leaves to be used on passenger-carrying vehicles in which, to give a clear central gangway, the enlarged part 11 of the axle structure enclosing the reduction and transmission gear is arranged towards one end of the axle close to the road wheel 12.
