Abstract

376,918. Splicing yarn. STANLEY, A. H., 88, Chancery Lane, London.-(Potter, W. W. ; Pawtucket, Rhode Island, U.S.A.) June 11, 1931, No. 17037. [Class 120 (iii).] Textile threads are spliced by twisting together overlapped thread ends in the presence of an adhesive thereon ; a suitable thread splicer comprises opposed members having thread contacting faces which are relatively rotatable on an axis perpendicular to such faces, and means for supplying an adhesive to the overlapped thread ends. The U-shaped member 10 has secured to it a baseplate 12, preferably covered with a friction material such as cork or rubber, provided with two threadguiding holes 13, and has pivoted on its underside a thread cutter 14 provided with an operating handle 16 and adapted to move across the holes 13 to sever thread ends. In one limb 17 of the frame 10, a support 18 for a knob 19 is slidably mounted and contains an inclined slot 28 which engages the operating handle 16 of the cutting disc 14, so that on depressing the knob 19 the cutter is actuated. The knob 19 is rotatably mounted and contains a hollow chamber for liquid adhesive, separated by a disc 22 of sponge material from outlet ducts 21 in a disc 20 of elastic friction material. Mounted on the frame 10 are thread guides 26, 27 in line with the holes 13. The two thread ends 29, 30 to be spliced are placed one over each guide and through the opposite hole 13. The knob 19 is depressed and twisted about a third of a turn, this actuates the cutter 14 and severs the ends of the threads, imparts a rolling motion to the thread ends and so twists them, and squeezes some adhesive on to the spliced thread.
