Abstract

424,683. Artificial staple fibre yarns. BRITISH CELANESE, Ltd., 22, Hanover Square, London, TAYLOR, W. I., HALE, F. C., and WOODRUFF, A. H., c/o British Celanese, Ltd., Spondon, near Derby. May 22, 1933, Nos. 14722/33, 32284/33, and 15297/34. [Class 120 (iii)] Yarn containing staple fibre is formed from a continuous filament yarn by passing the latter between two surfaces of which at least one is a cutting surface, and which move at the same speed as each other and in the same direction as the bundle, but at a different speed therefrom, the surfaces exerting pressure on the bundle at a point in the length thereof whereby cutting is effected. The cutting means preferably comprises a pair of rollers of which one has a plain surface and the other a cutting surface, or both may have cutting surfaces, and one or both may be positively driven. Two pressing rollers may be used with one cutting roller or vice versa. An abrasive roller, e.g. one having a surface of emery or carborundum may be used. The pressing roller is preferably resilient, but with a hard surface, e.g. it may have a core of sponge rubber enclosed in a thin flexible metal sleeve, and may be pressed by a spring, weight, or lever, or by its own weight. The filaments are drawn through the cutting means by a gripping roller which may be surfaced with rubber, leather or cork, together with a pressing roller which may be plain or fluted, of metal, synthetic resin, cellulose acetate, or the like, or of rubber in a thin flexible metal casing; rollers having intermeshing grooves as described in Specification 410,805 may be used. The yarn may be passed more than once through the cutting apparatus. The filaments are supplied from one or more bobbins, and two or more bundles of filaments may be associated before treatment. The yarn may be wound in a cap- or ring-spinning device into any shaped package for immediate subsequent use. If the yarn is to be subsequently unwound axially. it is preferably wound with a quick traverse on a bobbin having an upper flange which curves into the barrel. The yarn may be lubricated, e.g. between the gripping rollers and the collecting device, by passing it over a wick or roller, or by spraying. Filaments of different denier and characteristics may be contained in the bundle, or two or more yarns may be doubled continuously with cutting ; the cut yarn may be doubled with yarns of natural fibre ; or a light continuous thread may be fed directly to the gripping rollers and combined with the cut thread. The continuous filament yarn 10 passes between the cutting roller 12 and pressing roller 11, to the gripping rollers 13, 14 which draw the filaments past the cutting roller with a greater peripheral speed than that of the cutting roller ; the filaments are twisted and wound in a cop-spinning device 29. Specifications 397,138, 403,738, 403,739, 420,298, and 424,752 also are referred to.
