Abstract
424,830. Yarns containing staple fibre. BRITISH CELANESE, Ltd., 22, Hanover Square, London, TAYLOR, W. I., HALE, F. C., and WOODRUFF, A. H., c/o British Celanese, Ltd., Spondon, near Derby. May 22, 1933, Nos. 3772/35, 3773/35, and 3774/35. Divided out of 424,683. [Classes 120 (ii) and 120 (iii)] Yarns containing staple fibre are formed directly from continuous filaments by causing a bundle of continuous filaments to pass in contact with the periphery of a fluted cutting roller moving in substantially the same direction as the filaments, but at a different speed and pressing the bundle against the roller so that the latter exerts a cutting action on filaments in the bundle ; the filaments may be pressed between the cutting roller and a plainsurfaced roller or between a pair of fluted cutting rollers and the bundle may be moved by a pair of gripping rollers moving at a speed different from that of the cutting roller or rollers. As shown the filament bundle 10 is drawn from a bobbin 15 and passes between pairs of rollers 11, 12 and 13, 14, the roller 12 having the cutting surface of sharp-edged flutes and the bundle 10 being pressed against it lightly by the roller 11 ; the roller 14 is provided with smooth flutes and is driven at a greater speed than the roller 12, so that the bundle, gripped against the roller 14 by the rubber covered loaded roller 13, is caused to slip over the periphery of the roller 12. The resulting yarn is collected by a cap-spinning device 29, the collecting bobbin preferably having an upper flange which curves gently into the barrel thereof, and the yarn may be lubricated before being twisted ; the gripping rollers 13, 14 are adjustably loaded by a pivoted lever 18 and weight 21 and the lever and weight device may be arranged to load the two pairs of rollers. The bundle may be subjected more than once to the cutting operation and may be twisted before such further operation and two or more bundles of filaments may be simultaneously cut and afterwards doubled. A continuous or other thread may be doubled with the filaments which have been cut and the bundle may consist of filaments of the same or different denier and the filaments or some of them may be hollow, lustrous or delustred and may contain pigments and the bundle may consist of different kinds of filaments. The speeds of the cutting and pressing rollers may be the same, or different and the cutting roller may be driven by the pressing roller and two cutting rollers may operate with a single pressing roller or vice versa. The grooves in the roller may be straight or helical and may be of semicircular, rectangular, triangular or other cross-section and when the pressing roller does not cut, it may be rigid or resilient in character and may comprise a cover of sponge or other rubber supporting a thin metal sleeve. The bundle may be pressed against the cutting roller by a stationary member. The gripping rollers may be made of or surfaced with rubber, leather or cork, and one or more of such rollers may work against a smooth or fluted roller of metal, synthetic resin, cellulose acetate, &c., and rollers having intermeshing grooves as described in Specification 410,805, may be used. The third Provisional Specification also refers to Specifications 397,138, 403,738, and 403,739.
