Abstract

376,388. Fuel-injection pumps. CORDINER, W., 336, Garscadden Road, Glasgow. April 16, 1931, No. 11350. [Class 102 (i).] In a fuel-injection pump the barrel is formed in two parts A<1>, A<2>, Fig. 2, forming between them a recess C, which is in communication with the supply pipe through ports C<1>. The plunger is formed with an axial passage B<1> and with radial ports B2, B<3>, which co-operate with the upper and lower edges of the recess C to effect the commencement and termination, respectively, of the discharge. The lower edge C2 is helical, and the plunger is rotatable to vary the po:int of release and hence the amount of the charge, while the upper edge may be inclined to advance the timing of injection with decrease of charge. As shown in Fig. 2b, the edges may be oppositely inclined from the point of minimum injection in order that the pump may be regulated by rotation of the plunger in either direction from the minimum point. In a modification the recess C is replaced by two recesses, one effecting admission and the other release. The plunger may have two radial ports, or a single radial port communicating in succession with the two recesses. The recesses may be replaced by holes D, D<1>, Figs. 5 and 5a, with which admission ports E and release ports E<1> co-operate.' The top edge of the plunger is rounded and the ports are preferably arranged in diametrically opposite.pairs, in order to balance the thrust.
