Abstract
375,400. Stuffing-box substitutes. APPLEYARD, C. J. S., Norton Hall, The Green, Norton-on-Tees, VIGERS, B. E. A., Winnington Hall, Northwich, Cheshire, and IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES, Ltd., Millbank, London. March 25, 1931, No. 9175. [Class 122 (v).] In liquid-seal devices wherein a viscous fluid is pumped between a shaft provided with right- and left-handed helices and its casing, the liquid traverses a closed circuit and passes through cooling-means at one or more points during its travel through the said helices. Oil is drawn from a low-pressure, reservoir 1 by a pump 3 and supplied to a groove 5 in a bush 22 around the shaft of a highpressure turbo-compressor. Helical grooves 6, 12 are cut in the shaft 21. When the shaft is rotated, the liquid passes from the groove 5 to a groove 7 and then by pipes 8, 10 through a cooler 9 and returns to a groove 11 and flows towards the interior of the machine. Liquid flowing along the shaft is caught by a disc 13 and thrown on the casing 20. A baffle 23 forms a collecting-chamber. The liquid passes to a collecting-chamber 15 provided with a gauge 16, and then through a pressure-reducing valve 18 back to the reservoir 1.
