Abstract

The knotting and other properties of bristles, horsehair, straw, and like products containing organic derivatives of cellulose are improved by subjecting the products to the action of a strong swelling agent. The swelling agent may be a mixture of a solvent with a diluent, or a substance which exerts only a restricted solvent, or strong swelling action. For cellulose acetate products, asym. dichlorethylene, or the monoethyl ether of diethylene glycol may be used. The swelling agent may be applied to the materials in hanks, or by immersion, or when the materials are travelling from point to point by passing them through a bath of sufficient length to produce the desired result or by bringing them into contact with moistened wicks, discs, or rollers. The treatment may be carried out under conditions which allow shrinkage to take place, or shrinkage may be prevented. The treatment may also result in a modification of lustre.
