Abstract
373,024. Furnace walls. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd., Crown House, Aldwych, London.-(Assignees of Smith, A. R. ; 832, Union Street, Schenectady, New York, U.S.A.) Aug. 24, 1931, No. 23791. Convention date, Aug. 26, 1930. [Class 51 (i).] The cooling tubes 7 of furnace walls are provided with metal cupped d members 8 permanently secured to the tubes such as by welding or brazing so that portions of the tubes project into the cupped members which are filled with refractory material 15. Such refractory material may consist of the combustion residues from the fuel. The cupped members are formed by a punching operation and in attaching the members to the tubes spaces 13 are left between the members in which are inserted wooden laths 14 the refractory material being then inserted. The laths are burnt out during the operation of the furnace and spaces are left between the members allowing for expansion. The inside of the members and the tubes may be roughened at 16 to retain the refractory material.
