371,742. Brake shafts. FORD MOTOR CO., Ltd., 88, Regent Street, London.- (Assignees of Sheldrick, L. S. ; 1424, River Lane, Dearborn, Michigan, U.S.A.) Sept. 8, 1931, No. 25243. Convention date, Sept. 8, 1930. [Class 103 (i).] A brake-operating cross-shaft particularly for vehicles is formed from a tube of relatively large diameter to reduce torsion and bending in the operation of the brakes, the ends being reduced to provide the bearings. In making the shaft, the section 11 at one end is first slightly reduced by forcing through a die to permit ready assembly of the operating-arm 17 on the main unreduced part of the shaft. The end parts 12 are then further reduced as by a drawing operation to provide the bearings of the shaft, this operation resulting in thickening of the metal at these parts. For application to an automobile, the shaft may then be bent as shown at the central part to clear the torque tube 16. Arms 18 connected to the brakes are secured to the ends of the shaft.
