Abstract

262,340. Lightalloys, Ltd., and Grieve, W. H. June 15, 1926. Hand - wheels. - Motor - vehicle &c. steering-wheels, comprising a rim 3 and spider (consisting of a central boss 5 and spokes 1), are constructed by forcing the spoke ends 2 against the rim by pressure, relative movement being prevented by friction. The rim 3 is preferably of butt-welded steel tube and the spider of aluminium-silicon or other aluminium alloy, the spokes 1 being initially bowed. The rim is supported during assembly in a, frame 4, and the spider centred on a spigot 6, the spokes being straightened to cause their shaped ends 2 to grip the rim by pressure or repeated blows at the centres of the bowed parts. Alternatively, initially-straight spokes may be lengthened by swaging.
