Abstract

369,315. Moulding rubber &c. footwear. NORTH BRITISH RUBBER CO. Ltd. and WILLIAMS, W. A., Castle Mills, Edinburgh. Jan. 15, 1931, No. 1427. [Class 87 (ii)]. Footwear made wholly or partly of rubber is moulded in a machine comprising a battery of units each of which comprises a table 17 to which side-moulds 19 are pivoted at 18, the mould elements being normally retained open by a spring 24. The pin 18 is provided with a cam-faced washer which co-operates with a similar cam or one of the side-moulds, so that the moulds are forced on to the table 17 during closure of the moulds by cables 25 controlled by pedals 30 acting through a yielding link 26, 27. The sole plate 40 has screws 39, whose heads engage under slots 41 in a plate secured to the table 17 and the shoe with a roughly shaped rubber sole applied to the insole is mounted on the sole plate, an inflatable last being placed in the shoe. The side moulds are then closed on to the base carrying the sole plate, and are locked by a bolt 35 which has a cross-piece 42 engaging a slot 43 in one mould member, and which has a cam-faced handle 49 engaging a similar cam on the other mould member. The last is then inflated and the table heated by electrical heating elements 65 arranged in pairs, the two elements of each pair being connected in series, while the pairs are in parallel across the mains. After the rubber has been shaped and vulcanized the moulds are unlocked, whereupon a spring 44 tilts the bolt 35 and causes a lug 50 thereon to strike a. pin 51 which is loosely mounted in one side mould and which abuts against the other side mould, the mould halves being thereby automatically opened. Thermostatic control 66 of the temperature is provided, the temperature being indicated by a thermometer 67.
