Abstract

459,010. Moulding rubber footwear. GASH, D. G., Nelson Street, Balaclava, Victoria, Australia. April 21, 1936, No. 11372. Convention date, April 26, 1935. [Classes 70 and 87 (ii)] One-piece rubber shoes &c. are produced by placing uncured rubber forming the upper and sole portions on a core, inserting the core into a half-mould, positioning an uncured rubber heel, inserting a wedge-shaped sole and heel plate adapted to apply pressure on the mould being closed, assembling the mould sections under pressure and vulcanizing. Alternatively the whole shoe may be formed from a single uncured rubber sheet. The rubber may be coloured and the sole and heel may be of harder rubber than the upper. The mould is adapted to produce a pair of shoes &c. and has recesses 11 to receive the cores 12 and tapered recesses 15 to receive the wedge-shaped pressure plate 14. The core 12 is retained in position by keys 19 on the mould engaging corresponding grooves in the core. Small channels 20 are provided on the mould faces to receive excess rubber during moulding. The plate 14 may have projections 21 thereon to form a tread pattern and other projections 24 may be provided on the mould or core. The mould sections are held under pressure by screws 25 and is heated in a vulcanizer. In order to vary the thickness of the soles, different pressure plates may be used or spacing pieces may be inserted behind the plates.
