Vulcanizing boots and shoes.-Relates to machines for vulcanizing rubber soles to boots and shoes, of the kind in which the upper with its insole secured thereto is placed upon a last with the upper downwards, the last being reversed to bring the upper into engagement with a sole mould on the machine before admitting steam to a heating chamber in the last. According to the invention, the whole vulcanizer, including heated last and moulds, is mounted on trunnions so that it can be turned through 180‹ and is combined with mechanism for bringing the last and moulds into position for simultaneous vulcanizing inside and outside the shoe. As shown, the vulcanizer comprises a body part 15 formed with a hot plate on which the sole mould is mounted and a steam heated last 52 carried by an arm 25 mounted by a pivot 23 to a bracket on the body part. The whole vulcanizer is mounted on trunnions 18 and can be turned through 180‹ to the vulcanizing position shown in Fig. 4. In this position the steam enters the chamber in the body through the trunnion 18 and steam passes to the hollow last through the pivot 23. The last comprises a hollow front part 52, Fig. 9, a hinged heel part 51 and a sole plate 53 Fig. 10. The sole mould comprises a sole plate and side plates adapted to be moved laterally by rack and pinion mechanism operated by a handle 67. In operation, the arm 25 is swung over by means of lever and cord mechanism 73, 26, and an upper is placed on the last and rubber in the sole mould; the arm 25 is then swung back to bring the last on to the mould and the arm is secured by a catch handle 29, final pressure being applied by screw sleeves 34; the whole vulcanizer is then turned to the vulcanizing position in which steam enters the heating chambers and condensed water can escape. A coiled spring 35 tends to raise the last carrying arm 25 by acting on an intermediate lever 24. When it is desired to lower the last on to the mould the lever 26 is operated by a pedal 43 and intermediate gear to stress the spring and allow the arm 25 to descend freely. Electrical heating may be employed.
