Abstract
366,823. Making stranded electric conductors. PIRELLI-GENERAL CABLE WORKS, Ltd., 144, Queen Victoria Street, London, and GIFFIN, G. W., Oakmount, Velmore Road, Chandlersford, Hampshire. May 5, 1931, No. 13308. [Classes 83 (ii) and 83 (iv).] Rolling.-Stranded non-circular, generally sector-shaped, conductors adapted to be combined in a multicore cable are formed by stranding wires to form a conductor of circular cross section, to which, by passage between rollers bodily revolved round the conductor in a plane at rightangles to it, a non-circular cross section and helical twist are imparted in a single operation. The wires are fed from a rotary carriage 1, through holes in a face-plate 2, to a die 3 where a stranded conductor of circular cross section is formed. The conductor thus formed is passed between rollers 4 which are carried on a rotating frame 5. The rate of travel of the conductor is determined by the winding on to a capstan 6 which is interconnected mechanically with the frame 5 so as to give the desired pitch of twist. Between the capstan 6 and frame 5 the conductor passes through paper-insulating heads 8. Specification 351,480 is referred to.
