Wire ropes made by special methods.-In forming a rope which is free from tendency to untwist the strans or wires 2, 3 are first twisted together upon the core 1 to form a rope S<1> which is then unravelled and the unravelled elements are laid together to form the finished rope. More than one preliminary twisting and unravelling may be performed one the component elements. In one form of apparatus the strands 2, 3, Fig. 3, are arranged on spools 23 mounted in a flier 20, 21 in such a manner that as the flier rotates the spools have no rotational movement about their own axes, and are fed to a pretwisting-device 5 together with the core 1; from the die 5 the strands 2, 3 are guided by means of apertures 51 in a rotating plate wand are so unravelled, and from thence the strands, having a helical preformation, are guided to a second die 6 wherein they are closed upon the core 1 to form the finished rope. Small pulleys may be arranged in front of the apertures 51 for guiding the unravelled strands. In another form of apparatus, Fig. 6, the unravelling is performed by leading the strands 2, 3 over a shaped block 85 which is rigidly secured to the twisting head 40 which carries the die 5; the block 85 may have longitudinal ribs formed thereon, between which the strands may be led. The strands if of irregular section may be so fed to the preliminary twisting head that they are rotated about their own axes, preferably through 360‹. Armoured electric cables of which the armouring has no tendency to untwist may be formed by the above method.
