[Class 109.] Cables of fibrous material are made in a machine wherein the threads are wound upon braked bobbins 1 arranged on racks 3, from which they pass through a thread guide or comb 8, an impregnating bath 9 and apertured plates 17, 22. The ends of the threads are secured to a hook 34 mounted upon a carriage 32 so as to rotate to twist the threads into a strand. The carriage 32 is mounted upon rails and is driven by an endless rope 48 or chain, and serves to draw the threads from the bobbins 1. A number, preferably four, of strands so formed are secured at one end to a hook 102 upon a second carriage 89, and at the other end to a hook 83, are placed in the grooves of a cone or top 84, and are twisted to form the cable. A rotatable needle 110 is provided within the top 84 to allow coreless ropes to be formed. The braking means for the bobbins 1 comprise hingedly mounted small boards resting upon the bobbins. The impregnating tank 9 containing tar or other liquid dressing is preferably provided with rollers 10, 11 for guiding the threads into and out of the tank, a wheel 12 mounted upon a weighted arm 13, and a brush 14 to remove superfluous tar &c. from the threads. The threads after passing through the compressing die 26 may be passed through a crating chamber.
