Abstract

Wire ropes; strands of special section, with; machines for making.-The locking envelope A of a locked coil wire rope is constituted by wires of irregular shape which, before being laid about the core X, are twisted in such manner that they possess internal stresses which tend to lay the locking envelope more tightly about the core. One or more layers of non-circular wires, pretwisted, but not to the extent of the locking wires, may be provided between the core and the envelope, or, as shown in Fig. 4, untwisted circular wires H may be arranged between the twisted locking wires A. The pretwisting is effected by rollers Q, N which are preferably mounted so as to rotate with the laying head k<2> of the usual rope-making machine, and are relatively adjustable both angularly and axially of the machine to vary the pitch of the twist given to the wires. The wires A are drawn from spools R mounted on carriers S rotating with the laying head, through guides t<1> to the twisting rollers Q, N and thence to the laying head k<2> by which they are laid about the core X.
