Abstract

1502507 Telephone cables HENRICH KG MASCHINEN FUR DIE DRAHTINDUSTRIE 11 Dec 1975 [11 Dec 1974] 50862/75 Heading H1A A method of producing telephone cables comprising, e.g. quads, comprises performing any particular process step on each lead comprising the quad at the same time on the same machine, so that any process variations, e.g. in dielectric constant of insulant, or elongation of conductor due to stretching, affect all the leads at the same point along their length, which is said to reduce unwanted coupling with adjacent circuits. In Fig. 1, conductors 5-8 are drawn through dies in the same draw bench 9 by rollers 1-4 driven from a common source, and pulled through electrolyte baths 11, 12, by means of which an electric current is passed through the conductors to anneal them. Insulation is applied by extruder 17 whose heads are fed from a common supply of insulant, and markings are applied to the conductors as required in 22. The leads are then wound on to spool 27, either without being twisted together (Fig. 2, not shown) in which ease they are subsequently twisted together by apparatus (28), or else are twisted together by pulleys (50-53) (Fig. 3, not shown) which rotate about the axis of spool (27) to twist the wire before it is wound on to the spool. The twisted wire may be unwound from the spool such as to give it a reduced or increased angle of twist and may have its leads marked before or after initial twisting.
