Abstract

792,338. Extrusion-coating telecommunication conductors. SIEMENS & HALSKE AKT.- GES. Feb. 17, 1956 [Feb. 19, 1955], No. 5016/56. Class 87(2). [Also in Group XXXVI] In a process for making multi-core telecommunication cables, the conductors of a group of cores are individually but simultaneously coated with insulating material by means of a single extrusion press, and then the insulating material is converted to cellular material. Fig. 2 illustrates the production of a single stai quad. Four bare conductors a, b, c, d, run from bobbins 24 through a guide 25 to an extrusion press 26 from which they emerge coated with, e.g., polythene. The coated conductors (cores) pass through a zone 27 in which the polythene is foamed by heating to give it a cellular character, and then through a zone 28 in which the cellular material is cooled to harden it, and finally through a twisting die 32 and so to a drawing drum 30 and winding bobbin 31. Fig. 1 shows the single star quad thus made, covered with other material 11, 12. In a modified procedure the cores may be wound on to a bobbin without being twisted and then, in a separate operation, unwound from the bobbin and twisted. Multiple twin star quads may be made by winding pairs of foamed and cooled cores, each pair being wound on a separate bobbin, the twisting of the two cores of each pair and of the pairs to quads being then carried out in a separate operation. The Fig. 2 apparatus may be modified in that (a) the cores may pass through gauging dies in or after the cooling zone 28 ; (b) the four cores may be led to a twisting die separate from frame 29, then wound with tape and finally led to a drawing drum and winding bobbin ; (c) a separate guide for each core may be arranged between the cooling zone and die 32. The bare conductors may be pre-twisted before being coated. The insulation on each core may be of a different colour, colouring material being supplied through channels on the inside of the extrusion nozzles, or may be given a distinguishing marking after they leave the extrusion press.
