Abstract
365,749. Spring door closers. ELLIOTT, C. A., Gosbrook Road, Caversham, Reading. Dec. 24, 1930, No. 38854. [Classes 65 (i) and 65 (ii).] A spring closing and holding device for doors opening against a wall at right-angles to the doorway comprises a bar 2, Fig. 2, pivoted at one end by a spring hinge 3 to the wall and carrying a roller at the other end which abuts against a stop 8 on the door when the latter is closed ; this stop yields to force, allowing the door to be opened against the pressure of the spring hinge, the end of the bar 2 running along a plate 7 on the door. The stop 8 is formed on a plate 5, Fig. 4, pivoted at 6 to the plate 7, and the free end of the plate 5 bears against a leaf spring 10, which provides the necessary resistance to yielding of the stop. The spring hinge 3 is carried on a plate 12, Figs. 5 and 6, which is attached by screws to two clamping strips behind a plate fixed to the wall, the fixed plate having apertures to allow of adjustment, as shown. The device is also applicable to swing doors, in which case it may be duplicated on the other side of the door, and to revolving doors. Since the device tends to force the door away from its hinges, the door may be tied back to the door-post, particularly when doubleaction hinges are used, by a spring or by a tie rod pivoted to the door-post and having pin-andslot connection with the top of the door.
