Description

HOLD-OPEN DEVICE Russell C. Flint, Princeton, 111., assignor to LCN Closers, Inc., Princeton, III., a corporation of Illinois Application May 31, 1957, Serial No. 662,892
7 Claims. (Cl. 16-49) The present invention relates, as indicated, to a holdopen device, and more particularly to a hold-open device in combination with a door-closing mechanism which may be applied to doors opening in a single direction, or doors of the double-acting type which swing in both directions from a closed position.
In the patent to Aspinwall, No. 2,360,095, October 10, 1944, there is shown a door closing mechanism for a double-acting door. The present invention has for one of its objects the provision of a hold-open device for use in connection with the door-closing mechanism, such as shown in the Aspinwall Patent No. 2,360,095.
It is another object of the invention to provide a holdopen device for a door-closing mechanism which is positive in its hold-open action, yet can be released with a very small amount of energy.
Still another object of the invention is to provide a hold-open device that is inexpensively manufactured.
Further objects and advantages of this invention will become evident as the description proceeds and from an examination of the accompanying drawing which illustrates one embodiment of the invention and in which similar numerals refer to similar parts throughout the several views.

Figure 1 is a fragmentary view in elevation illustrating a hold-open device embodying the invention in combination with a door-closing and checking mechanism.
Figure 2 is a sectional view taken along the line 22 of Figure 1.
Figure 3 is a somewhat diagrammatic plan view illustrating the operation of the hold-open device of the present invention.
Figure 4 is an enlarged fragmentary diagrammatic view of the end of the arm of the hold-open device.
Figure 5 is a sectional view taken along line 5-5 of Figure 4.
Referring now to the drawing, the hold-open device of the present invention mounted on a door closing and checking mechanism is referred to generally as the door closing mechanism 16 shown as being mounted in a recess 11 in the lintel 12 of a door frame which includes opposed jambs and a conventional sill (not shown) in opposed relation to the lintel 12. The door closing mechanism 16 is of the type shown in the Aspinwall Patent 2,360,095. It is connected to the door 13 of a double-acting type through the medium of an arm 20. The door 13 is mounted in the door frame by opposed pintles, one of which, as represented by 15, is shown in the drawing.
The closing mechanism 16, of the type shown in the Aspinwall Patent No. 2,360,095, drives a spindle 18 that depends therefrom. Keyed to the drive spindle 18 is an arm 20. Arm 20 is provided with a slot 22 for the purpose to be described hereinafter.
Mounted on the upper edge of the door 13 is a stud 30 having journalled thereon a roller 31. Roller 31 slides in the slot 22 of the arm 20.
Pf 2,905,965 C Patent d Sept. 29, 1959 At the end of the arm 20 opposite the spindle 18 is a recess 40 in one side of the slot 22. Adjacent and opposite to the recess is a spring-biased slide 41 having wedge projection 42 with a sloping face 43 facing the recess 40, in order to cam the roller 31 into the recess for keeping the door in a hold-open position. The spring-biased slide is slidably mounted on a cross piece 44 by rods 45 fastened to the slide and projecting through apertures in the cross piece. Between the slide and the cross piece are springs 46 which normally urge the slide away from the cross piece toward the recess to extended position. The ends of the rods have flanges at 47 beyond the cross piece to act as stops for the rods when the slide is urged away from the cross piece.
Referring now to Figure 3, in the position A the door 13 is open. By moving the door from the open position A to the hold-open position B, the door pivots in a counter-clockwise direction about the pintle 15. The arm 20 keyed to spindle 18 of the door-closing mechanism also swings in a counter-clockwise direction through the force of roller 31 mounted on the door. At position B, the roller is progressed to the extreme end of the arm 20 opposite from the spindle 18 and compresses the springs 46 by engaging wedge 42 of the slide 41. When the wedge is moved away from the recess 40 a certain distance, the cam face 43 thereof pushes the roller into and positively holds the roller in the recess. The wedging action of wedge 42 keeps the roller 31 in the recess with the energy supplied by springs 46. The positive holdopen action can be readily overcome by a small amount of energy supplied in moving the door towards closed position. This again causes the slide arm to retract by pushing the wedge 42 away from the recess 40, releasing the roller for movements in the slot 22.
In the drawing and specification, there has been set forth a preferred embodiment of the invention, and although specific terms are employed, they are used in a generic and descriptive sense only and not for purposes of limitation. Changes in form and in the proportion of parts, as well as the substitution of equivalents are contemplated, as circumstances may suggest or render expedient, without departing from the spirit or scope of this invention as further defined in the following claims.
I claim:
1. A hold open device comprising, an arm having a longitudinal slot adapted to be mounted on the drive spindle of a door closing device, a stud adapted to be secured to a door with a movable member thereon for movements along said slot during opening and closing of said door, said arm provided with a recess communicating with said slot for maintaining said movable member in a hold open position corresponding to an opened position of the door, a wedge member slidably mounted in said slot having a cam face opposite said recess for urging said movable member into said recess as it approaches holdopen position, and spring means for urging said wedge member toward said recess for removably keeping said movable member in said recess.
2. A hold open device comprising, an arm having a longitudinal slot adapted to be mounted at one end portion on the drive spindle of a door closing device, a stud adapted to be secured to a door with a movable member thereon for movements along said slot during opening and closing of said door, said arm provided with a recess at the end portion opposite said drive spindle communicating with said slot for keeping said movable member in a hold open position corresponding to an opened position of the door, a wedge member slidably mounted in said slot for urging said movable member into said recess as it approaches hold-open position, and means for urging said wedge member to a position opposite said recess for removably keeping said movable member in said recess.

A hold open device comprising, an arm having a longitudinal slot adapted to be mounted on the drive spindle of a door closing device, a stud adapted to be secured to a door with a movable member thereon for movements along said slot during opening and closing of said door, said arm provided with a recess communicating with said slot for keeping said movable member in a hold open position corresponding to an opened position of the door, a Wedge member slidably mounted in said slot, said wedge member having a sloping face opposite said recess for urging said movable member into said recess as it approaches hold-open position, and means for urging said wedge member to a position opposite said recess for removably keeping said movable member in said recess.

A hold open device comprising, an arm having a longitudinal slot adapted to be mounted on the drive spindle of a door closing device, a stud adapted to be secured to a door with a movable member thereon for movements along said slot during opening and closing of said door, said arm provided with a recess communicating with said slot for maintaining said movable member in a hold open position corresponding to an opened position of the door, a movable slide member in said slot having a Wedge projection opposite said recess for urging said movable member into said recess as it approaches hold-open position, and spring means for urging said slide member toward said recess whereby said wedge projection is adapted to removably keep said movable member in said recess.
5. A hold open device comprising, an arm having a longitudinal slot adapted to be mounted on the drive spindle of a door closing device, a stud adapted to be secured to a door with a movable member thereon for movements along said slot during opening and closing of said door, said arm provided with a recess communicating with said slot for maintaining said movable member in a hold open position corresponding to an opened position of the door, a wedge member slidably mounted in said slot for urging said movable member into said recess as it approaches hold-open position, and spring means for urging said wedge member toward said recess for removably keeping said movable member in said recess.

A hold open device comprising, an arm having a longitudinal slot adapted to be mounted on the drive spindle of a door closing device, a stud adapted to be secured to a door with a movable member thereon for movements along said slot during opening and closing of said door, said arm provided with a recess communicating with said slot for maintaining said movable member in a hold open position corresponding to an opened position of the door, a movable slide member in said slot having a cam face thereon for urging said movable member into said recess as it approaches hold-open position, and spring means for urging said slide member to place said cam face opposite said recess for removably keeping said movable member in said recess.
7. A hold open device comprising, an arm having a longitudinal slot adapted to be mounted on the drive spindle of a door closing device, a stud adapted to be secured to a door with a movable member thereon for movements along said slot during opening and closing of said door, said arm provided with a recess at the end portion opposite said drive spindle, communicating with said slot for maintaining said movable member in a hold open position corresponding to an opened position of the door, a movable slide member in said slot having a wedge projection with a sloping face for urging said movable member into said recess as it approaches hold-open position, and spring means for urging said slide member toward said recess for removably keeping said movable member in said recess.
