365,341. Printing machines. PHILLIPS ENGINEERING CO., Ltd. and BROOKE, N., Evelyn Road, Sparkhill, Birmingham. Feb. 2, 1931, No. 3256. [Class 100 (ii).] Tripping-arrangements.-In a control for a printing-machine, wherein, in the event of a sheet being improperly regist ered against the front stops, printing is prevented, there is provided a sheet support b, having one or more apertures a, illuminated by a lamp c, but normally covered by the sheet when properly registered by the stop e. A photo-electric or selenium cell d is arranged on the other side of the support b, so as to respond to light passing to it through the illuminated apertures a when the sheet is out of register. The cell d is connected to an electromagnet and one or more amplifying valves and the current passing when the cell is affected by light energizes the magnet which operates any suitable check mechanism for the machine. The device may be used in conjunction with the usual rotary cylinders and a mirror may be arranged in a gap in such a cylinder so that light from an illuminated aperture is reflected from the mirror to the cell to operate the check mechanism. Alternatively, the lamp may be carried in a box situated in a gap on the cylinder, the box being formed with apertures normally covered by a properly registered sheet.
