Abstract
333,588. Schnellpressenfabrik Frankenthal, Albert, et Cie Akt.-Ges. Dec. 17, 1928, [Convention date]. Registering webs; delivery apparatus. - In apparatus for associating insets in register with other printed products comprising feed-rollers and cutting-means for the inset-web, and a grippercylinder for receiving the' insets after they have been cut off, the gripper-cylinder is provided with detectors controlled by the insets and adapted by the aid of electric, pneumatic, or optical devices to vary the peripheral speed of the feed-rollers. The arrangement shown in the Figure comprises feed-rollers 11, cutting-means 13, 14, and a gripper-cylinder 18 for the inset-web T, and cylinders 7, 8 for associating the insets 15 with the other printed products 5. The grippercylinder is now provided with contacts 21, 22, and is adjacent to stationary contacts 28, 29, the contacts 21, 22 being connected to two motors which run in opposite directions and drive differential, frictional, or other change-speed gearing for accelerating or retarding the feed-rollers. A reversible motor may replace, the two motors, and expanding feed-rollers may be employed instead of change-speed gearing. Each inset 15 has a perforation 26 or marginal notch which normally lies between the contacts 21, 21. When an inset is sufficiently out of register to cause the perforation to coincide with the contact 21 or 22 the above-described motor arrangement is effective to vary the speed of the feed-rollers and thereby increase or retard the speed of the inset-web until the insets are again in register. Preferably the speed of the inset-web is such that only one of the contacts is effective. The contacts may be adjustable to deal with insets of different lengths, and duplicate contacts 23, 24 may be provided. If the contacts are disposed immediately behind the grippers 19, insets of different lengths can be registered without adjusting the contacts. When pneumatic control is employed, the grippercylinder is formed with ducts containing plungers for closing contacts in circuit with the abovedescribed motor-arrangement. Normally the ducts are exhausted and are sealed by an inset, but when a perforation coincides with a duct, air is admitted, the plunger is released, and the motor-arrangement is effective to increase or decrease the speed of the web. When optical control is employed, coincidence of the perforation in an inset with one or other of a pair of apertures in the gripper-cylinder causes one or other of two lamps, giving lights of different colour or intensity, to project light on to a selenium cell and thereby initiate forward or reverse rotation of a motor controlling the feedrollers in the above-described manner. The lamps and selenium cell are respectively arranged inside and outside the gripper cylinder or vice versa. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 (3) (a) comprises also the following subject-matter, which does not appear in the Specification as accepted :-The above-described arrangements may be employed for automatically adjusting the position of a sheet-holding device on a folding or other cylinder. When optical control is employed, perforating the insets can be avoided by reflecting light from or transmitting it through the insets, a differential effect being produced by the presentation of the printed matter or a printed special sign. Register may be effected manually (i) by adjusting the feed-rollers in accordance with an indicator controlled by a selenium cell, or (2) by adjusting the grippers on the gripper-cylinder.
